The world’s second-largest cryptocurrency exchange, Coinbase, announced on Wednesday that it is launching several new products, expanding into stocks, advanced trading, and built-in prediction markets.

The announcements came during a San Francisco event titled ‘System Upgrade,’ led by Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong.

The launch signifies a strategic shift, with the U.S.-based exchange aiming to be a multi-asset financial platform, rather than a venue based solely on crypto. Coinbase announced that several of the new products are set to launch in the United States starting Wednesday.

Coinbase executives described the move as part of a longer-term strategy to enable continuous access to global markets through crypto-powered infrastructure.

Stock Trading Push Brings Coinbase Into Direct Competition

Coinbase confirmed that users will be able to trade stocks directly on its platform, extending its services beyond digital assets. The company stated that the feature supports its longer-term plan to enable round-the-clock trading of stocks and exchange-traded funds using crypto-based infrastructure.

Max Branzburg, Coinbase’s head of consumer and business products, described the move as a step toward global, continuous access to equity markets. The expansion places Coinbase in more direct competition with platforms such as Robinhood and eToro, which already combine crypto and equity trading. It also comes as rivals Kraken and Gemini offer tokenized stock products outside the U.S. market.

Coinbase Rolls Out Tokenize Platform for Institutional Assets

Building more on this sentiment, Armstrong also introduced Coinbase Tokenize, an end-to-end system designed to bring off-chain assets onto blockchain networks. The service combines issuance, custody, compliance, and trading into a single framework. The announcement comes as large financial institutions, including the Depository Trust and Clearing Corporation, pursue tokenization of highly liquid traditional assets.

Additionally, Coinbase said further updates on the tokenization service are expected early next year. In parallel, the company also confirmed beta access to Coinbase Advisor, a robo-advisory product developed by a team of portfolio managers with a combined 75 years of experience; however, access is limited to a small number of users.

The exchange also improved its decentralized trading integration with Solana tokens after an integration with the decentralized exchange broker Jupiter, which will roll out over the next few weeks.
